The Refuge caters each client’s treatment to their individual needs. Some clients will
use just one type of therapy while others will benefit from a combination of many. Below
is a brief description of some of the primary treatments used at the Refuge.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) – CBT is an evidence-based treatment that aids the
client in becoming increasingly aware of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors and how
they influence one another. New skills are taught to aid the client in reframing their
thoughts to work toward changing behavior.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – DBT includes learning coping skills to increase
interpersonal skills, emotional regulation and distress tolerance. These skills allow the
client to move into a place of acceptance and change.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) – EMDR includes utilizing
bilateral stimulation to desensitize one’s emotions connected to traumatic events and
then move into reprocessing. When reprocessing is complete the memory will no longer
overwhelm the client’s system.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) – MI is a client centered approach to help clients begin
making the changes they desire in their lives.
