Group Therapy

What is Group Therapy?
There are two different types of group therapy provided at The Refuge Healing Center
(The Refuge), psychoeducation and process. These group types can be used in
conjunction with one another or as stand alone.
A psychoeducation group provides education, training, and support on different mental
health and substance use disorder topics. These would be informative classes that
utilize lectures, group activities, and group discussion to gain the knowledge clients
need to make the progress they desire in their lives.
A process group is a group that provides opportunity to receive support from peers
through group discussion. In addition, process groups allow opportunities for clients to
practice newly learned communication skills in a safe and protective environment
facilitated by a trained therapist.
At The Refuge we will offer a variety of groups. Some groups will be “closed” which
indicates a clear beginning and ending date and requires all participants to begin and
end together. These are typically groups where developing trusting relationships is
important for effective treatment such as in trauma treatment.
